Surviving Suicide

Have you lost someone to suicide?

The Surviving Project provides space to share your story, and to network with other survivors.

Safe Talk is a practical 3 hour workshop open to anyone 16 years and older.  Learn the signs and symptoms. Be part of the solution.

The Ottawa Suicide Prevention Coalition offers help to those affected by suicide but may not be served by existing programs.  They work particularly with those who are not family members–sports teams, school friends, co-workers , neighbours, etc.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention has some great articles, and contains information for support groups and awareness.

I have lost close friends and family members to suicide and no matter what anyone says, it still really hurts. We question ourselves, why didn’t we see it coming. But after a while, I stopped putting the responsibility on my own shoulders of guilt and realized they did what they did because that was what they thought was the solution. It’s too late to change things and it won’t help me to continue beating myself about it. I have to think of the good and fun things we did and draw on that. Then I smile and say thank you for the time I did have.

The other thing we need to remember is that such a solution makes sense to them. And it isn’t about dying, it’s about escaping pain.

  2. You have some helpful things here. Thank you! There were two suicides last week at my daughter’s high school. The students are trying to process. The parents are worrying. The principal is doing his best to calm nerves and prevent any more. It is so, so hard. I will pass this on to those who need it.

I am profoundly sorry for your losses. It’s one of the most difficult things to go through, and there are no shortcuts. I will be praying for your daughter and for her friends. Please, if there is anything else I can do, let me know.

Let's talk. What can you add to this discussion?
